Bertazzoni dishwashers

Eight dishwashers, and the one part of this make that talks. Five are tall tub, three standard; one is panel ready and one is an 18-inch. Two run at 39 decibels, which is quiet enough that "it has stopped" and "it is running" can be hard to tell apart. Unlike almost everything else here, these publish a real error table — F1 through F9, plus FF and HI, each with a meaning the maker prints — and a code is worth writing down before you touch anything.

What goes wrong with it

Each one covers the likely causes in the order they are worth checking, and what to do in five minutes before booking anything.

  • The lower basket of an open dishwasher with glasses in it and the tub floor visible below
    The code, then the filter

    Dishwasher not draining

Water standing over the filter plate at the end of a cycle, or a machine that stops part-way. These dishwashers publish real codes — the only appliance in the line that does — and the answer is very often something you can see with the filter in your hand.

    • Water covering the filter at the end of a cycle
    • A cycle that stops part-way
    • A code that returns as soon as it fills
    What it usually means
  • An integrated dishwasher standing open in a wood kitchen with dishes loaded in both baskets
Arms, scale, and the local water

    Dishwasher not cleaning

The cycle runs, the time counts down, and things come out dirty — or only the top rack does. In this city hard water is behind more of these than any component, and two of the checks that find it need no tools at all.

    • Only the top rack coming out dirty
    • Film or grit left on everything
    • Cycles that run normally and achieve nothing
    What it usually means
  • Plates and glasses standing in a dishwasher basket at the end of a cycle
Often a bottle, not a part

    Dishwasher not drying

Everything comes out clean and wet, or plastics stay soaked while china is fine. Before anybody quotes a heater it is worth knowing that on a condensation-drying machine rinse aid is not optional — without it, water sheets and stays.

    • Clean but wet at the end of every cycle
    • Plastics wet while china is dry
    • Drying that got worse gradually
    What it usually means
  • Two hands at the control strip along the top edge of an open integrated dishwasher door
    The latch, before the board

    Dishwasher will not start

The panel lights, you press start, and nothing happens — or nothing lights at all. The door latch is the answer far more often than the electronics, and it is one of the least expensive parts in the machine.

    • Lights on, nothing happens on start
    • Completely dead panel
    • Starts only if the door is pushed hard
    What it usually means
  • The dark front of a closed dishwasher in a dim kitchen with one small orange indicator lit
It is trying to tell you something

    Dishwasher beeping or panel unresponsive

Beeping that will not stop, a panel that answers half its presses, or a machine that has stopped mid-cycle and is complaining. On this appliance — unlike the rest of the line — there is usually a code behind it, and the code is worth more than the sound.

    • Beeping with a cycle abandoned part-way
    • Some pads working, others dead
    • A code that will not clear
    What it usually means

What we do on it

Starting figures for this equipment in South Florida. The exact cost is confirmed after an on-site diagnostic — and this is not the whole list of what can go wrong, so call if your problem is not here.

  • A technician kneeling behind a built-in appliance with a multimeter in one hand and its probes on a terminal, a work lamp clipped above
    from $95

    Diagnostic visit

We work out what is actually wrong before anybody quotes a part. On this make that usually means measuring rather than reading, because most of these appliances report nothing at all when they stop. The fee is credited toward the work when you go ahead.

    • Measured rather than guessed — resistance, current, temperature, airflow
    • The free causes checked first, before any part is named
    • Credited toward the repair
    What this involves
  • Two hands holding a dishwasher drain hose at the waste connection under a kitchen sink with a tray and a torch beside them
    from $145

    Dishwasher drain & filter repair

Water standing in the bottom at the end of a cycle, or a machine that stops part-way. This is the one appliance on the site that tells you what is wrong — write the code down before you clear it — and the answer is very often something you can see with the filter in your hand.

    • The code read and recorded before anything is cleared
    • Filter, sump, hose and disposal checked in that order
    • A full cycle run and the drain watched before we leave
    What this involves
  • The rear of a dismantled dishwasher with its circulation pump and heater block exposed and hands working on the hose connection
    from $155

    Dishwasher wash & heat repair

The cycle runs, the time counts down, and nothing comes out clean or dry. On this make, and in this city, hard water is behind more of these than any component — spray arms narrowed by scale, a heater working harder than it should, and a filter nobody has lifted in a year.

    • Spray arms, scale and water temperature checked before any pump talk
    • Wash and dry treated as two different complaints
    • Descale where scale is the answer, rather than a part
    What this involves
  • Gloved hands fitting a rubber door seal into the rim of a stainless dishwasher tub
    from $165

    Dishwasher leak & door repair

Water on the floor, a door that no longer latches, or a heavy custom front that has started dropping instead of lowering. A leak reported early is a much smaller job than a leak reported after a floor has been under it — and on a panel-ready machine the door hardware is doing more work than most people realize.

    • The source of the leak found before anything is replaced
    • Door springs and cables checked on panel-ready machines
    • The latch treated as a safety switch as well as a catch
    What this involves
  • The door of an integrated dishwasher swung down with its inner panel removed and the control strip exposed
    from $215

    Dishwasher control & electronics repair

A panel that ignores half its pads, a machine that starts a cycle and abandons it, a code that will not clear. Because these dishwashers actually publish codes, this is the one place on the site where the electronics can often be diagnosed before anybody opens anything.

    • The code used as evidence rather than cleared and forgotten
    • Latch, supply and water sensing ruled out before a board is named
    • The machine run through a full cycle after the repair
    What this involves
  • A technician kneeling to vacuum the condenser behind the removed kickplate of a built-in refrigerator, with a cloth and the grille laid out on the floor
    from $135

    Appliance maintenance visit

A planned visit rather than an emergency one. On this make it earns its keep in three specific places: brass burners that want cleaning rather than replacing, hood filters and ducting nobody has looked at, and the scale that South Florida water puts into every dishwasher, steam oven and coffee machine in the house.

    • Several appliances in one visit, which is where the saving is
    • Burners, filters, condensers and scale — the four things that actually shorten a life
    • A written note of what is starting to age, before it stops
    What this involves
  • Two technicians kneeling to fit a wooden cabinet panel onto the front of a built-in appliance
    from $175

    Appliance installation & refit

Setting a machine back into cabinetry it was taken out of, hanging a custom panel on a column, or putting right an installation that was never quite right. On this make it matters more than most: a great deal of the line is built in, and induction in a sealed island is the commonest self-inflicted failure we see.

    • Clearances and ventilation checked against what the appliance actually needs
    • Custom panels hung square and aligned to the neighboring cabinetry
    • Anti-tip, gas connections and leveling treated as the safety items they are
    What this involves

About Bertazzoni dishwashers

The best-documented machine this maker sells

This maker announces almost nothing — and then its dishwashers print a full table: FF for water that will not arrive, F2 for water that will not leave, F1 and F3 for water where it should not be, F5 F6 F7 F8 F9 across the pressure, heating and divisor systems, and HI for a supply problem that is not the dishwasher's problem at all. That makes them the most diagnosable appliance on the site, and it is worth taking advantage of: a code written down exactly, plus whether it returns after the power is cycled and how fast, will often decide the part before the visit.

What we are called out for

  • It will not drain. Filter, sump, drain hose, disposal plug — in that order, and the first three are things you can look at yourself in five minutes.
  • It will not wash. Spray arms, scale, water temperature, and only then the circulation pump.
  • It will not start. The door latch and its switch are the commonest answer by a distance; the machine is telling the truth when it says the door is open.
  • It leaks. The door seal, the arm bearing at the base, or a hose connection — and a leak reported early is a much smaller job than a leak reported after a floor has been under it.

Tall tub and standard tub

Five of the eight are tall tub, which is the taller cavity that takes a higher load and, in most kitchens, the reason a plate rack fits. The distinction matters here because racks, tines and baskets are not interchangeable between them, and half of the "my rack has broken" calls are a parts question rather than a repair.

South Florida water

Hard water is the background condition for every dishwasher in this city. It shows up as film on glass, as spray-arm ports that have narrowed, as a heater that takes longer than it used to, and eventually as a machine that is not really washing. It is worth knowing that a descale and a filter clean fix a good number of the calls that come in as "the dishwasher is dying".

What to have ready when you call

The model number, which is on the tub rim just inside the door, the code exactly as it appears, and whether water is standing when the cycle ends.

Questions about bertazzoni dishwashers

There is a code on the panel. What should I do with it?

Write it down exactly, including the letter, and then cycle the power at the breaker for a minute. Two things are worth telling us: whether the code came back, and how quickly. A code that clears and stays away for a week is a different conversation from one that returns the moment the machine fills. This is the one appliance on this site where the machine tells you which part of itself is unhappy — it is worth using rather than clearing and forgetting.

Water is standing in the bottom when the cycle ends.

Some water in the sump is normal and by design; a pool covering the filter plate is not. Before anybody comes out: lift the filter out, rinse it, and check the sump underneath for glass, a fruit sticker or a bone chip, which is what actually blocks these. Then check the drain hose where it goes under the sink — a hose that has been pushed down flat behind a bin, or a garbage disposal fitted without its plug knocked out, produces exactly this symptom and is not the dishwasher at all.

It runs but nothing comes out clean.

Work through the cheap possibilities first, because one of them is usually it. Spray arms that will not turn freely, or with ports blocked by scale. A filter that has not been out in a year. A detergent dispenser that opens but into a machine that is not getting hot. Or, in this city, water hard enough that everything is slowly furring up. If the arms spin, the filter is clean and the water is genuinely hot and it still does not wash, that is the circulation pump or the heater, and both are ordinary repairs.

Mine is panel ready and the front is a cabinet door. Does that matter?

For most repairs, no — the machine still comes forward the same way. What it changes is the care at either end: the custom front is heavy, it is fixed to the door with a bracket that is set for its weight, and the springs in the hinges are tensioned to carry it. If your door has started dropping or slamming rather than lowering gently, that is the spring or the cable rather than anything inside, and it is worth saying so when you book.

How quiet should it be?

Two of these are rated 39 decibels, which is genuinely quiet — quiet enough that people call because they think it has stopped when it has not. What is worth a call is a machine that has got louder: a rattle that comes and goes with the spray arm, a grinding at the start of the drain, or a hum that stays after the water has gone. Those are three different parts, and the first is often just cutlery in the wrong place.
