Bertazzoni speed oven repair

Five of these ovens are speed ovens: a microwave and a convection oven sharing one cavity, so the thing does in fifteen minutes what a conventional oven does in fifty. Two heating systems behind one door, and they fail independently — which makes the diagnosis unusually clean if you know which half has stopped.

On the visit

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

Work out which half has stopped

An oven that browns perfectly but no longer heats through has lost the microwave side. One that heats through but will not brown has lost convection. One that does neither is usually the door interlocks or the supply, which is a much cheaper answer than either.

  2. 02

    Test the convection side conventionally

Element, fan, sensor and control, exactly as on any convection oven. This half is ordinary and it is worth establishing early, because if it is healthy the visit is about the microwave half only.

  3. 03

    Test the microwave side safely

A measured power test rather than a guess, and nothing opened until the high-voltage capacitor has been discharged. This is not a caution we include for form: that capacitor holds a dangerous charge long after the appliance is unplugged.

  4. 04

    Check the interlocks

Every microwave has a set of switches that must agree the door is shut. One of them out of adjustment stops the whole appliance and mimics a far more expensive failure. They are checked before anything is condemned.

Eighteen built-in ovens, and they are not all the same machine. Five are speed ovens — a microwave and a convection oven sharing one cavity — five cook with steam, eight self-clean, and three carry the maker's own guided cooking. Two are doubles. What they have in common is that they are built into cabinetry, which decides how a repair starts: the oven comes forward before anything else happens.

Four microwaves and three of them are different machines: two over-the-range units that double as the hood, a 30-inch built-in, and a microwave drawer that opens downward from under the counter. The drawer is the one worth knowing about — it is a different mechanism from anything else on this site, and it fails in ways a door-and-hinge microwave never does.

    • A microwave that runs, lights and turns but no longer heats
    • A drawer that will not open, or opens and will not start

In more detail

About Bertazzoni speed oven repair

Two appliances, one cavity

A speed oven heats with microwave energy and with a convection element at the same time, which is how it cooks several times faster than a conventional oven. Five of the eighteen ovens in this line are built that way. For a repair it is unusually convenient: the two systems are independent, so which one has stopped tells you most of what a technician needs before he arrives.

The three symptoms and what each means

  • Browns but does not cook through — the microwave half.
  • Cooks through but does not brown — the convection half: element, fan or sensor.
  • Does nothing — usually the supply, the main control, or a door interlock, which is the cheapest of the three.

The one safety point we will not soften

The high-voltage capacitor in the microwave section holds a charge that can injure you long after the appliance is unplugged. On every other appliance on this site there is something sensible an owner can check. Here there is not, and we would rather say so plainly than imply otherwise.

What the repair costs

Speed oven work starts at $205. The convection half is priced like any oven repair; the microwave half depends on which component the measured test points at, and that figure is agreed with you before anything is opened.

Before you book

Questions about bertazzoni speed oven repair

It gets hot but food is not cooking through.

That is the microwave half, and the convection half doing its job is why it still gets hot. Say exactly that when you book — it points at the magnetron, the high-voltage components or the interlocks, and it means the technician arrives expecting a microwave repair inside an oven rather than an oven repair.

It does nothing at all.

Often better news than it sounds. When both halves stop together the common causes are the supply, the main control, or a door interlock switch — and the last of those is a small, inexpensive part. Two independent heating systems failing simultaneously is much less likely than one thing they both depend on.

Can I take the cover off and look?

Please do not. Everything else on this site has some sensible owner-side checks and this one genuinely does not. The capacitor in the microwave section stores enough energy to injure you well after the appliance has been unplugged, and there is no useful check to be done with the cover off that offsets that.

Does it have to come out of the cabinet?

Usually yes, and it should be planned for. A speed oven is built into a tall housing, often above or below another appliance, and the components are reached from the back and sides. It is routine but it is not a fifteen-minute visit, and it is better to know that when booking.
