Look at the gap, not the door
A column door that has dropped shows itself as an uneven gap against the neighboring cabinet, usually wider at the top. That is visible in a photograph and it is often the first evidence that a temperature complaint is really a door complaint.

Test the seal with the panel fitted
A gasket that seals perfectly on a bare door can fail once a heavy custom front is hung on it, because the weight changes the geometry. Testing without the panel proves nothing about how the appliance actually lives.

Adjust hinges and closers together
These doors are carried by hinges tensioned for the panel's weight and, on most, a closer that pulls the last inch. Adjusting one without the other gives you a door that sits right and slams, or closes gently and does not seal.

Prove it holds
A closed-door check for escaping cold along the whole perimeter, and a look at whether the door closes on its own from a few inches. Both are quick and both are the point of the job.

Five refrigerator columns, five freezer columns and four wine cellars in this line are built to take a custom front. That front is heavy — often much heavier than the appliance door under it — and everything about how the door behaves depends on hinges tensioned to carry it.
Why a temperature complaint is often a door complaint
A column door that has dropped three or four millimeters stops making contact along the top of the gasket. The machine responds by running longer, then continuously, and eventually by icing its evaporator because the defrost cycle cannot keep up with the humidity coming in. The owner sees a cooling problem. The cause is a hinge.

My column is not holding temperature and I was told it needs a repair.
It may — but a door that no longer seals produces exactly that symptom and costs a fraction to put right. On a column it is more likely than on a freestanding machine, because the door is carrying a heavy custom panel and the hinges have been doing that for years. It is worth ruling out first, and we do.
The door does not close by itself any more.
The closer or the hinge tension, and it matters more than it sounds. A door that stops a quarter inch short does not seal, and a column that is not sealing runs continuously and ices its evaporator. This is the cheapest repair on the refrigeration side of this site and it prevents two of the more expensive ones.
The cabinet front is misaligned with the rest of the kitchen.
That is adjustable, and it is worth having done properly rather than living with. The panel mounts on brackets with adjustment in several directions, and getting it back into line with the neighboring doors is part of this job rather than an extra.
Do you take the panel off?
Only where the work requires it, and it goes back aligned. On a column the panel and the trim are how the appliance meets your kitchen, and putting them back a millimeter out is the difference between a repair you notice and one you do not.
