Bertazzoni range hood motor & blower repair

Thirty-seven hoods in this line — as many as there are ranges, because this maker expects the two to be bought together. When the motor stops, hums, or has become far louder than it was, the repair is contained and the parts are ordinary. When the lights work and the motor does not, that is useful information rather than bad news.

  • From $95 diagnostic, credited to the repair

On the visit

How this visit actually goes

The same order every time, so nothing is opened and nothing is charged before you have seen the figure and said yes.

  1. 01

Establish where the motor actually is

On an insert or an island hood the blower is sometimes remote — in the attic, in a soffit or on the roof — and the thing in your kitchen is a housing and a control. Knowing that before the visit changes what comes on the van and how long it takes.

  2. 02

    Use the lights as evidence

Lights working with a silent motor tells us the hood has power and the board is at least partly alive. That narrows the problem to the motor, its capacitor, the speed control or the wiring between them, and rules out a great deal in one observation.

  3. 03

    Take the filters out first

A loaded grease filter makes the blower work against a restriction, which makes it hotter and louder and shortens its life. A significant share of "the motor is going" calls are a filter and a wash.

  4. 04

Test the motor under load and balance the wheel

A fan wheel with grease built up on one side is out of balance, and that is a noise and a bearing killer rather than an electrical problem. It is cleaned and checked before a motor is condemned.

Thirty-seven hoods, which is as many as there are ranges — this maker expects the two to be bought together. Twenty-one are wall mounts, seven chimney hoods, five inserts built into a cabinet, three island hoods hanging over a counter. Nineteen move 600 cubic feet a minute. When one stops pulling, most of the diagnosis is not in the hood.

About Bertazzoni range hood motor & blower repair

Thirty-seven hoods, four shapes

Twenty-one wall mounts, seven chimney hoods, five inserts built into a cabinet or custom canopy, and three island hoods. Nineteen of them are designed around 600 cubic feet a minute. The shape matters for access more than for the repair: an insert has to be got at through the cabinetry, and an island hood has a duct run through the ceiling and no wall behind it to help.

What the lights tell you before anyone arrives

Lights and motor usually share a control board and a supply. Lights on with a dead motor means power is arriving and the board is working, which eliminates most of the expensive possibilities in one look. Nothing at all — no lights, no motor — points at the supply or the board. It is worth checking before you call, because it genuinely changes what we bring.

Why filters are on a repair page

Because a loaded filter is a mechanical problem, not a housekeeping one. The blower has to pull through it; when it cannot, it runs hotter, louder and slower, and the bearings and the motor pay for it over a year or two. A meaningful share of hood motor calls in this city started as a filter that had not been out in eighteen months.

What the repair costs

Motor and blower work starts at $165. A remote blower in an attic or on a roof is quoted separately because the access is a different job, and we establish which you have before the appointment rather than at it.

Questions about bertazzoni range hood motor & blower repair

The lights work but the fan does nothing.

Good news as diagnoses go, because it proves the hood has power and the control board is not dead. What remains is the motor, its capacitor, the speed control, or the wiring to the motor — and on a remote blower, the motor is not in the kitchen at all. All of those are ordinary parts.

It has got much louder than it used to be.

In order of likelihood: loaded grease filters, which make the blower fight a restriction; a fan wheel with build-up on one side, which throws it out of balance; loose ducting resonating; and, last, bearings. Three of those four are cleaning rather than parts, which is why noise complaints are worth making early.

It hums but does not turn.

Usually the capacitor, which is a small and inexpensive part, or a wheel that is physically jammed by build-up. A motor that hums is a motor that is being told to run and cannot, which is a very different thing from a motor that is silent.

How often should the filters be washed?

More often than most manuals suggest if you cook with oil, and that is not a maintenance upsell — a hood pulling through a tacky filter is measurably worse at its job and is wearing itself out faster. Most of these go through a dishwasher on a hot cycle. It is the single most effective thing an owner can do for a hood and it costs nothing.
