# Bertazzoni oven heating & sensor repair

### The three parts that account for almost everything

- **The temperature sensor.** A resistance at the back of the cavity. Cheap, fast to measure, and responsible for most ovens that run hot or cold.
- **The elements.** Bake, broil and convection, failing one at a time. A partly failed element usually shows visible damage once you know what to look for.
- **The door.** Seal and hinges. Unglamorous, and behind a surprising share of “it never quite gets there”.

### The part everybody expects and rarely needs

The control board. It is the most expensive thing in the oven and the least likely answer, which is why on this site nothing is ordered before the sensor has been measured in front of you. An oven that is wrong by a consistent amount is almost never a board.

### Eighteen ovens, and not all of them are the same machine

Find out how wrong, and how consistently

Wrong by the same amount every time points at the sensor. Wrong by different amounts on different days points at the seal or a failing element. It is the first question and it changes the whole visit.

Measure the sensor

An oven temperature sensor is a resistance with a known value at a known temperature. It takes a minute, it costs nothing to check, and it is the reason most ovens run hot or cold.

Test the elements separately

Bake, broil and the convection element behind the back wall are three circuits. An oven that browns but will not bake through has lost one of them, and knowing which is the difference between a stocked part and a wasted trip.

Then check the door

A hardened seal or a dropped hinge lets an oven lose what it makes, and the symptom reads exactly like a failing element. Hand round the closed door for warm air, and a look at whether the door sits square.

### Everything I bake is browning on top and raw underneath.

That is a bake element that has failed while the broil element still works, and it is one of the more satisfying diagnoses because it is usually visible. The lower element will often show a blister, a break or a bright spot where it has burned through. It is an ordinary part and an ordinary repair.

### My oven is out by thirty degrees. Can it just be recalibrated?

Sometimes, and it is worth asking. Most of these ovens have an offset adjustment for exactly this, and if the sensor measures correctly and the oven is simply reading a consistent amount out, an offset is the right answer and it is free. What an offset cannot fix is a sensor that is genuinely drifting, because then the amount it is out by keeps changing.

### It takes forever to preheat.

Three candidates, easy to separate. A partly failed element, which usually shows itself. A door seal that has hardened, which you can feel. Or a convection fan that has stopped on an oven that relies on it. All three are ordinary, and none of them is the control board people expect.

### Does the oven have to come out of the cabinet?

For a sensor or a bake element, usually not — both are reached from inside the cavity. For the convection element, the fan, or anything electrical at the back, yes: the oven slides forward out of its housing. It is routine work, and what slows it down is trim, filler strips or a countertop added after the oven went in. Tell us if anything has been built around yours.
