### Two boards, not one

Most built-in ovens have a user interface board — the display and the pads — and a separate power board that switches the elements. Nearly every “the control has failed” call is one or the other, and they cost very different amounts. A blank display over an oven that still heats is the interface. A perfect display over an oven that does nothing is the power side. Establishing which before anything is ordered is most of the value of the visit.

### What kills boards near an oven

- **Heat.** Console cooling matters more than people think, and a stopped fan takes boards with it.
- **Steam.** A door seal that has hardened sends moisture up into the console every time the oven is used.
- **Supply.** Dips, surges and a marginal neutral, which is also why clocks reset.

Replacing a board without asking which of those did it is how the same repair happens twice.

### The free causes, which are commoner than they should be

Control locks. Sabbath and demo modes. A connector that has worked loose behind an oven that was slid back in hard. Between them these account for a real share of the calls that arrive as a failed control, and they cost nothing to find.

Rule out the supply and the obvious

A partly lost supply, a loose connector behind the oven, or a control lock left on will all produce something that looks like a failed control. All three are free to check and all three come first.

Separate the two boards

Most of these ovens have a user interface board behind the panel and a relay or power board doing the actual switching. A dead display with a working oven is one; a live display with nothing happening is the other. They are different parts and they are not interchangeable.

Look for the cause rather than the casualty

Boards near an oven die of heat and of moisture. Where a board has failed, it is worth knowing whether a cooling fan has stopped or a seal has been letting steam into the console, because otherwise the new board follows the old one.

Program it and run it

Clock, timer, bake, broil, convection and — where fitted — the clean cycle, exercised before the visit ends. A control repair proven only by the display lighting up is not proven.

Then the power side is alive and the interface is not, which is usually the display board or its ribbon connection rather than the expensive board. It is worth saying on the phone because it changes what comes on the van.

### The display works and nothing happens when I press anything.

Two candidates: the touch panel itself, which senses through the glass and can be defeated by moisture or a cracked overlay, or the board behind it. They are separated by testing rather than by guessing, and the panel is usually the cheaper of the two.

### It keeps losing the time.

Almost always the supply rather than the oven — a shared circuit that dips, a loose neutral, or a breaker that is marginal. Worth noting whether it happens when something else in the kitchen starts up, because that observation frequently solves it without a part.

### Are control boards worth replacing on an older oven?

Sometimes, and we will not pretend otherwise when they are not. On a machine still supported, a board is an ordinary if unwelcome part. On a discontinued platform it can be the point at which the honest answer is that the oven has had its life. You get that answer before anything is ordered, not after.
