### Four machines, three kinds

### The safety point we will not soften

The high-voltage capacitor in a microwave holds a charge that can injure you long after the appliance has been unplugged. Whatever else is worth trying at home — and on this site there is a great deal — a microwave that has stopped heating is not one of those things.

### What actually gets repaired

Doors, latches and interlock switches account for more “it does nothing” calls than the electronics do, and they are inexpensive. On the drawer, the open-and-close mechanism and its switches account for most calls and are entirely repairable. The magnetron and the high-voltage side are real repairs on the built-in and the drawer, and a fair conversation on a small over-the-range unit.

Establish which half has failed

A machine that runs, lights and turns but does not heat is the cooking side. A drawer that will not open, or opens and will not start, is the mechanism. An over-the-range unit whose fan has stopped is a ventilation repair wearing a microwave's clothes.

Check the interlocks

Every microwave has switches that must agree the door — or the drawer — is shut. One out of adjustment stops the whole appliance and mimics a far more expensive failure. Small part, big difference.

Test the cooking side safely

A measured power test rather than a guess, with the capacitor discharged before anything is touched. This is the one appliance where there is no useful owner-side check, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.

On a drawer, exercise the mechanism

Open, close, and the switch positions through the whole travel. A drawer that works cold and stops when warm is a different problem from one that never moves, and only a full cycle finds it.

### What is different about a microwave drawer?

Everything mechanical. Instead of a hinged door there is a drawer on rails with a motor to open and close it, switches that have to agree it is shut, and a seal along a horizontal opening. So it has complaints no other microwave has — it will not open, it opens partway, it opens and will not start — and those are the mechanism, not the cooking side. They are usually the more repairable half.

### It runs but does not heat. Worth fixing?

Worth diagnosing, and the answer depends on the machine. A built-in or a drawer is a substantial appliance fitted into cabinetry and a magnetron or high-voltage component is an ordinary repair on one. On a small over-the-range unit it is a fair question whether it is worth it, and you will get a straight answer rather than a quote.

### My over-the-range microwave heats but the fan does not.

Two appliances in one housing and only one has a problem. The ventilation side is a blower, a filter and a duct or recirculating path, repaired exactly like the hood it stands in for. Check the grease filters first — on an over-the-range unit they sit directly in the plume and load faster than any other filter in the kitchen.

### Can I take the cover off and look?

Please do not. The capacitor stores enough energy to injure you well after the appliance is unplugged, and there is no useful check with the cover off that offsets that risk. Everything else on this site has sensible owner-side checks; this one genuinely does not.
