A glow igniter heats until it draws enough current to operate a safety valve, the valve opens, gas arrives, and the igniter is already hot enough to light it. The whole system is built so that gas cannot flow unless something is hot enough to burn it — which is why the igniter is the switch as well as the flame source, and why measuring its current is the diagnosis. ### Why “it glows, so it must be fine” is wrong An igniter loses current draw as it ages long before it loses its glow. A weak igniter looks exactly like a healthy one, gets hot, and never quite persuades the valve to open — so the oven sits there glowing and cold. This is the commonest reason a gas oven is misdiagnosed as a control problem, and the difference between the two is a clamp meter and thirty seconds. ### The eleven machines this applies to Eleven of the thirty-seven ranges in this line are all gas. Is the igniter still the problem? Very often yes, and this is the single most misunderstood repair on a gas oven. The igniter is not only a spark source — it is the switch. It has to draw a specific current for the safety valve to open, and as it ages it draws less while still glowing perfectly. So an igniter that looks healthy can be entirely responsible for an oven that never lights. It is measured, not looked at. ### Is a gas oven safe to keep using if it sometimes does not light? Intermittent ignition is worth attending to promptly. The safety system is doing its job — no flame, no gas — but an oven that takes several attempts is an oven whose igniter is at the end of its life, and the failure mode you want to avoid is one that happens with the door closed and the kitchen unattended. If you smell gas at any point, stop using it and call the gas supplier before you call us. ### How is this different from the burners on top? Completely different mechanism. The cooktop burners use a spark and flame sensing; the oven uses a glow igniter and a current-operated safety valve. They fail independently and they are separate repairs, which is why a range whose burners are perfect can have an oven that will not light. ### My oven is dual fuel, not all gas. Then this is not your repair — a dual-fuel range has electric ovens, and an oven that will not heat is an element, a sensor or a board.
