The shortest appointments on this page. - **Built-in — eleven.** Fitted flush into the cabinetry, usually with the machinery at the top behind a grille. Reachable, but through a specific route and in a specific order. - **Columns — five.** All refrigerator or all freezer, wearing your own door fronts. Panels and trim come off first and go back on aligned, and that is real time. ### What we are actually called out for The fresh food side warm while the freezer is cold — a fan, a damper or a frosted evaporator, and rarely the compressor. Water on the floor of the compartment — the defrost drain, almost always. Ice makers that fill and will not release, or never fill. Doors that no longer seal, which on a built-in is as much about alignment as about the gasket. And a machine that runs and runs, which in this city is usually dust on the condenser before it is anything expensive. ### Panel ready, and the thing to say on the phone Two of these are panel ready and five are columns, which means the front you look at may be a cabinet door rather than the appliance. What does that mean? It usually means the cold is being made and is not getting where it should. On most of these machines one evaporator serves both compartments and a fan and a damper move the air between them, so a fan that has stopped, a damper that has stuck, or an evaporator quietly building up ice will all produce exactly this: a freezer that seems fine and a fridge that is not. It is a good complaint to have, in the sense that it points somewhere specific and it is rarely the compressor. ### What is a column, and why is it a different job? A column is a single-purpose tall unit — all refrigerator, or all freezer, or all wine — built into the cabinetry and wearing your kitchen's own door front. Five of the thirty here are columns. The difference for a repair is access: the panel, the trim and sometimes the door itself have to come off before anything can be measured, and they have to go back on aligned or the kitchen looks wrong. That is time on the invoice, it is predictable, and we would rather you heard it on the phone than at the door. ### There is water pooling inside at the bottom. That is the defrost drain, nine times out of ten. Every one of these machines defrosts itself on a cycle and the melt water has to run down a channel at the back of the freezer, through a small tube, and into a tray by the compressor where it evaporates. That tube blocks — with debris, or with an ice plug that forms because the last defrost did not finish. When it blocks, the water backs up and finds the floor of the compartment or, in a bottom mount, the floor of your kitchen. Clearing it is routine; leaving it is how a floor gets damaged. ### The ice maker has stopped and everything else works. Start with the two free checks: the fill tube and the freezer temperature. An ice maker will not cycle if the compartment is not cold enough, and it will not fill if the tube at the back has an ice plug in it — which is itself usually a sign the water is arriving too slowly. Beyond that it is the inlet valve, the mold heater or the module, all of them ordinary parts. Tell us whether it fills and will not release, or never fills at all: those are two completely different repairs. ### It is running constantly. Is that bad? Not by itself — in a Miami August a hard-working refrigerator is a normal refrigerator, particularly a built-in one in a warm kitchen. What is worth a call is a machine that runs constantly and is still not holding temperature, or one that has started running constantly after years of not doing so.
