# Bertazzoni ranges

### What is in the line, and in what shape

Thirty-seven ranges, in three widths and three fuels. Eleven all gas, nine dual fuel — gas on top, electric ovens underneath — and thirteen induction, which have no burners at all. Twelve are 48 inches, twelve are 36, eight are 30. Ten run brass burners; sixteen have a cast iron griddle let into the top. A 48-inch range is two ovens of different sizes, six burners and that griddle in one appliance, which is why “the oven is not heating” needs a follow-up question before anybody drives anywhere.

### The failures we are called out for

- **Ignition.** A burner that clicks without catching, or catches and drops out on low. Spark, sensing and gas supply are three different answers to one complaint, and two of them cost nothing to check.
- **The oven, without a code to help.** Running hot, running cold, or taking far too long. On a dual-fuel or induction machine that is a sensor, an element or a board; on an all-gas oven it is the oven burner and its safety valve.
- **The griddle and, on some machines, the grill** — separate zones, separate circuits, separate repairs.
- **Induction power boards and their cooling.** These ranges are built into cabinetry in a hot city; a position that cuts out under load is usually heat before it is the coil.
- **Doors.** Hinges and springs on doors that are genuinely heavy, and the seal that decides whether the oven holds its temperature at all.

### Why there are no codes here, and what to say instead

This maker publishes error codes on its dishwashers and its induction tops and nowhere else. On the gas ranges there is no display to read and no code to look up, which means the description you give on the phone is the diagnosis. The five things worth noticing before you call: does it spark; does it light; does it stay lit on low; is the flame blue and tight or yellow and lazy; and did it change suddenly or drift over months. Those are worth more than any code table.

### My range shows no error at all. Does that make the diagnosis harder?

It makes it different rather than harder, and on this make it is normal. The gas ranges publish no error codes — there is nothing on the panel to read out, and a technician who asks you for one is asking for something the appliance was never built to give. What replaces it is description: whether the burner sparks, whether it lights and then goes out, whether it goes out only on low, whether the oven is wrong by a little or by a lot, and whether it was always like this or started last month. Those five answers narrow a gas range further than a code would.

### What is different about the brass burners?

Brass is used because it holds its shape and its finish under repeated heat far better than plated steel, which is why ten of these ranges have it. What it means in practice is that the burner is worth cleaning rather than replacing: a brass cap that has gone dull and blotchy is almost always still a good burner with cooked-on spill in the ports. What is not worth doing is attacking it with an abrasive or a caustic oven cleaner — that takes the surface off and the burner never looks right again. Warm water, a soft brush, and a straightened paper clip through the ports.

### The griddle heats unevenly. Is that a repair or is that normal?

A cast iron griddle takes a long time to come up and holds heat unevenly while it is doing it, so ten minutes in is not a fair test. Give it twenty with nothing on it. If it is still hotter at one end than the other, that is the element or its control underneath, and it is a repair on its own: the griddle is its own heated zone with its own circuit, sitting between burners that keep working perfectly while the part is on order. Which is good news for both the bill and the kitchen.

### Dual fuel, all gas, induction — does it change who comes out?

It changes what happens in the first ten minutes. All gas means the oven is a burner too, so an oven that will not heat is an ignition question. Dual fuel means gas on top and electric underneath, so the same complaint is an element, a sensor or a board. Induction means there are no burners at all: each position is a coil and a power board, the heat is made in the pan, and the failures are electronic and thermal. Tell us which one you have when you book and the right parts are on the van rather than on order.

### What should I have ready when I call?

The model number, which on these ranges is on a plate behind the kick panel at the bottom or inside the oven door frame — a photograph of it is far easier than reading it out. Then: which oven and which burner, whether it is gas, dual fuel or induction, and what the flame looks like. Blue and steady, yellow and lazy, or lifting off the port are three different answers.
