### Four machines, three kinds

- **Over the range — two.** A microwave and a ventilation hood in one housing, and either half can fail without the other.
- **Built-in — one, 30 inches.** Fitted into cabinetry, often above a wall oven, and it comes out before it is repaired.
- **The drawer — one, 24 inches.** Opens downward from under the counter, on rails, with a motor and a set of interlocks. A different mechanism from anything else on this site.

### The one safety point we will not soften

The high-voltage capacitor in a microwave holds a charge that can injure you long after the appliance has been unplugged. Whatever else is worth trying at home — and on this site there is plenty — a microwave that has stopped heating is not one of them.

### What we are called out for

Runs but does not heat, which is the cooking side. A drawer that will not open or will not start, which is the mechanism and the interlocks. ### It runs but does not heat. Is that worth fixing?

It is worth diagnosing, and the answer depends on the machine. A built-in or a drawer is a substantial appliance fitted into cabinetry, and a magnetron or a high-voltage component is an ordinary repair on one. Whether it is worth doing on a small over-the-range unit is a fair question and we will give you a straight answer rather than a quote. What is not worth doing is opening it yourself: the capacitor in a microwave holds a dangerous charge long after it is unplugged, and that is not a caution we are putting in for form.

### What is different about a microwave drawer?

Everything mechanical. Instead of a door on hinges there is a drawer on rails with a motor to open and close it, a set of switches that have to agree the drawer is shut before anything runs, and a seal along a horizontal opening rather than a vertical one. So a drawer has a whole class of complaint no other microwave has: it will not open, it opens partway, it opens and will not start. Those are the mechanism and its switches, not the cooking side, and they are usually the more repairable half.

### My over-the-range microwave works but the fan does not.

That is two appliances in one housing and only one of them has a problem. The ventilation side is a blower, a filter and a duct or a recirculating path, and it is repaired exactly like the hood it stands in for. Worth checking the grease filters first: on an over-the-range unit they sit directly in the cooking plume and they load up faster than any other filter in the kitchen.

### The turntable has stopped turning.

Usually the simplest thing on the page. The roller ring may be out of its track, the coupler under the plate may have split, or the small motor beneath the floor of the cavity may have failed. All three are cheap, and the first two are things you can look at while the appliance is unplugged. What it is worth knowing is that food heating unevenly with a stationary turntable is a consequence rather than a second problem.

### Is a built-in microwave harder to repair than a countertop one?

It takes longer, because it has to come out of its cabinet before anything can be reached, and it has to go back in square. The repair itself is the same. The reason to mention it is scheduling: a built-in microwave visit is not a fifteen-minute job even when the part is small, and it is better to know that when you book.
