That is worth stating plainly because it sets expectations: there is no chest freezer to talk about, and a repair on a column is a cabinetry job as well as a refrigeration one. ### What actually goes wrong - **Defrost that does not finish,** which shows as frost on the back wall and eventually as a fan working against ice. Heater, thermostat or control. - **Seals and alignment.** On a column the door carries a heavy custom front, and a door that has dropped a few millimeters no longer seals along the top. - **Condenser dust,** which in this city is a maintenance item rather than an event. - **The ice maker,** on the two that have one — fill, freeze, release, and the checks that separate them. ### What to have ready when you call The model number from inside the compartment, the width, whether there is an ice maker, and what the actual temperature is rather than what the display says it should be. Is that normal? A little on the surfaces of food is normal. Frost building on the back wall, around the fan, or into a sheet at the base is not — it means the defrost cycle is not finishing. That is a heater, a thermostat or a control, and it is worth catching early because the ice eventually reaches the fan, and a fan working against ice is a noise complaint on top of a temperature one. The other cause is much simpler and free to check: a door that is not quite closing, or a seal that has stopped sealing. ### It runs all the time. Should it? A column freezer in a Miami kitchen works hard, and running a lot is not the same as running badly. What matters is whether it is holding temperature while it does so. A machine that runs constantly and holds zero degrees is fine; a machine that runs constantly and is at fifteen has something wrong, and the first suspects are dust on the condenser, a seal that has gone, or a defrost cycle that is not completing. All three are ordinary. ### The ice maker in the column has stopped. Two of these columns have one, and it is the same set of checks as any other: is the compartment cold enough to cycle at all, is the fill tube clear of an ice plug, and does the maker fill and fail to release or never fill. Those three answers separate a water problem from a temperature problem from a module, and you can get all three without tools. ### Does the cabinet front have to come off? For most repairs, yes. A column wears your kitchen's own door front and is trimmed into the run, so getting to the machinery means taking panels off and then putting them back aligned. It is predictable work and we would rather quote it honestly than discover it at your door.
