### One machine, six systems

There is a single built-in coffee maker in this line, 24 inches, and it contains more moving parts than anything else in the kitchen: a grinder, a brew group that compresses and ejects a puck several times a day, a pump, a boiler, a water path and a milk path. Every one of those is a maintenance item as much as a repair item, which is why so many calls end in cleaning rather than parts.

### The coffee has got slow and weak. What changed?

Almost always the grind and the scale, in that order. A grinder that has drifted finer, or beans that are oilier than the last bag, will choke the brew group; scale narrows every water path in the machine and reduces what the pump can deliver. Both are maintenance rather than repair, and both are worth doing before anybody quotes you for a pump. If the machine has been descaled recently and the grind is right and it is still slow, then the brew group or the pump is the conversation.

### It keeps asking to be descaled and I keep descaling it.

Then either the routine is not reaching everything or the water is winning. South Florida water is hard enough that a machine used several times a day can genuinely need attention more often than the manual suggests. What is worth checking: that the descaler is the right kind and the cycle is being allowed to finish, that the filter — if the machine takes one — is being changed rather than just fitted once, and whether the counter is set for the water you actually have. A machine that is being descaled properly and still complaining has a sensor question.

### The milk system is not frothing.

The milk path is the part of a coffee machine that punishes neglect fastest, because milk residue sets hard inside narrow tubes. Before a visit: run whatever cleaning cycle the machine has, take the frother apart as far as it is designed to come apart, and soak the parts. A great many "the milk system has failed" calls end there. If it is genuinely clean and still will not froth, that is the steam valve, the pump or the air intake, and those are repairs.

### Is it plumbed in or does it have a tank?

It matters and it is worth knowing before you call. A plumbed machine brings a water supply, a valve and possibly a filter into the diagnosis, and a leak may be behind the cabinetry rather than in the appliance. A reservoir machine keeps everything in front of you. If yours is plumbed and there is water where there should not be, switch the supply off before anything else.

### Is one machine in the line worth a repair service at all?

That is a fair question and the answer is yes, for a specific reason: a built-in coffee maker is fitted into cabinetry alongside the rest of the kitchen, and replacing one is not like replacing a countertop machine — it is a cabinetry job with a lead time. Which means that on this appliance, more than most, a repair that keeps a working machine working is worth more than the part costs.
